Cynthia Portillo grew up by the Salton Sea and graduated from Desert Mirage High School. While in high school she joined the Green Energy and Technology Academy (GrEAT) in her sophomore year and started getting involved in the environmental movement. In her junior year she joined the GrEAT Sierra Alliance, which is a coalition between the Sierra Club and the GrEAT Academy. Cynthia became more politically involved and interned with Assembly member Eduardo Garcia in his Coachella. Before entering the environmental movement she was involved with GlobalGirl Media where she learned and fell in love with video production. With GlobalGirl Media she helped produce 4 short documentaries. Cynthia is now working on getting her associates degree in communications at College of the Desert. Portillo got involved with EcoMedia Compass when she joined them on a hearing in Sacramento and continued to work with them because of her passion and love for the Salton Sea.
